After Hours Psychiatric Emergencies

How to Request Urgent Psychiatric Support to your Home or within the Community

 If you or someone you know is experiencing a psychiatric emergency, please call 911 immediately.

 

Psychiatric Emergency Response Team (PERT)

  • Available by calling 911 or the San Diego County Sheriff's Department at 858-565-5200 AND request the assistance of the PERT Team 24 hours/day, 7 days/week.

  • PERT Team provides emergency assessment and referral for individuals with mental illness who come to the attention of law enforcement through phone calls requesting emergency assistance. 

  • Clinicians will respond with law enforcement to evaluate the situation, assess the individual's mental health condition and needs and if appropriate, transport the individual to a hospital or other treatment center, or provide a referral to a community based resource or treatment facility.

 

Mobile Crisis Response Team (MCRT)

  • Available by calling 988 or 1-888-724-7240 (San Diego County Access and Crisis Line) 24 hours/day, 7 days/week)

  • MCRT can help people of all ages and provide services in English and Spanish. MCRT can also assist in other languages through interpreter services.

  • Each team is made up of three staff: a mental health clinician, a case manager, and a peer support specialist. Teams do not include law enforcement staff. When they arrive, MCRT will assess and de-escalate the situation. They can also drive you to services you need.

    MCRT cannot help if there are threats of violence or medical emergencies.

 

 

How to Access Urgent Psychiatric Support AND Can Safely Transport your Student to a Facility

 

Emergency Screening Unit (ESU)

  • Students who are 17 years and younger
  • 4309 Third Avenue, San Diego, CA 92103

  • The ESU is available if you are able to safely transport your child to the ESU facility.

  • Available 24 hours/day, 7 days/week.

  • Please call in advance to inform the ESU of your intent to access the facility: 619-876-4502

  • The Emergency Screening Unit (ESU) provides emergency psychiatric evaluations, crisis intervention, crisis stabilization, brief outpatient counseling, case management and emergency medication management to children and adolescents under age 18. 

  • ESU serves the Medi-Cal population and those who do not have any medical coverage. Although those with private insurance can be seen at ESU, it is advised that the private insurance clients receive services at facilities and agencies authorized by the insurance company.
