Built in 2007, the school's namesake, Laura G. Rodriguez (1909-1994) was a beloved Logan Heights activist who founded Chicano Park and the Logan Heights Family Health Center in San Diego. Known for her strong-willed independence and determination, Rodriguez was recognized by former President Bush in 1991 as one of the One Thousand Points of Light, and her legacy is honored in a Chicano Park mural. More than 100 community members suggested the new school be named in her remembrance.
